Darcy the miracle pet
Darcy, above – a Cocker Spaniel that sustained horrific injuries after falling down a 60-foot dam – has been named our Pet Survivor of the Year.
Darcy was walking at Glascarnoch Dam in the Highlands of Scotland with his owners Gordon and Wendy Lyon when suddenly she jumped over a five-foot wall, only to find a 60-foot concrete slipway on the other side. Incredibly she survived the fall but was still badly injured.
Two-year-old Darcy stayed at the vets for nine days, and then needed months of rest and rehab at home. Now she’s almost fully recovered and loves running around outside again.
Entries for the awards, run in association with PDSA Petsurance, came from all over the UK. Darcy received the coveted title, the PDSA Pet Survivor trophy and a year’s free PDSA pet insurance. Six pets had death-defying ‘tails’ of survival against all odds, but the public voted Darcy as the bravest pet of them all. Their full stories can be seen on our website – pdsa.org.uk/petsurvivor
Super slimmer Oscar
Oscar the Spaniel was so obese from feasting on Sunday roasts that he couldn't jump up on to the sofa.
Now thanks to the life-saving care of one of our vet teams he’s become the biggest ever loser of weight in our national pet slimming competition, PDSA Pet Fit Club.
Oscar, from Wolverhampton, was nearly double his ideal weight but shed 1st 5lb (8.35kg) in just six months. He beat six other pet slimmers to be crowned Pet Fit Club Champ.
His fitness regime was supervised by Head Nurse Kay Brough at Wolverhampton Pet Hospital. Each year we run the competition to help the UK's fattest pets embark on a strict six-month diet and exercise programme, specially tailored and overseen by our vets and vet nurses. It helps get them back into shape and creates awareness of pet obesity.
Overall, this year's finalists, which included a Labrador, Chihuahua, Bullmastiff, two cats and a rabbit, lost a total of 4st 12lb (31kg).
