Welcome
Hello and welcome to your spring edition of PDSA News.
With Valentine’s Day this month we hope you’ll be showing your pets a little extra love and affection and doing all you can to keep them happy and healthy.
Inside this issue, you can read the heartening story of a brave little dog called Max who needed emergency treatment and about the importance of recognising the signs of heart disease in our pets. We also take a look at how our new animal first aid courses could save pets’ lives before they can get to see a vet (Dealing with a pet emergency).
Our supporters too show how much they love what we do through their donations and throughout 2017 one of our areas of focus will be on growing our income. All our activity in marketing, fundraising and PR – in fact everywhere that potential supporters might see our name – is going to be geared towards this end.
Our charity has seen plenty of ups and downs over the years and we continue to live through difficult times now. The new Fundraising Regulator is looking at rules governing fundraising and about giving people a choice about the charities they wish to hear from. There’s a need to restore trust and confidence in the wider charity sector and that’s something we’re happy to sign up to. So to paraphrase our Founder Maria Dickin ‘there’s a job to be done’ and I’m sure you’ll want to do all you can to help.
Enjoy the issue and if you’re reading this on a mobile phone or tablet, I hope you like our new digital version which saves us money on printing and postage. That’s more money to treat sick and injured pets and that’s one more good reason to get behind our cause.

Breaking news
Kerry McCleary is enjoying a fantastic start to the New Year having been named our Overall Volunteer of the Year 2016.
Kerry, who volunteered at our Glasgow Shawlands Shop before becoming a full-time employee last November, won the Retail Volunteer of the Year category but carried on her winning ways to be named the overall champion.
From the outset Kerry’s fitted in well with the team and quickly showed herself to be hardworking and dedicated with a fantastic rapport with customers and colleagues alike.
Congratulations to all the winners. We’ll have more details and photos from the presentations in the next issue of PDSA News out in May.
