Welcome

Summer’s upon us and I hope we’ll be lucky enough to get outside and enjoy some long-lasting sunshine.

We’re now just six months away from the start of our Centenary year (2017-2018) and are busy finalising plans on how to mark this wonderful milestone.

So don’t forget to keep an eye on PDSA News to find out what exciting activities are on the horizon! Our focus will be on raising awareness, driving income and engaging with our people and supporters.

Of course we wouldn’t be where we are today without the thousands of dedicated volunteers who do more for PDSA than we ever ask of them. There are a special few who, in the judges’ opinion, deserved to receive one of our coveted Volunteer of the Year Awards.

I was delighted to travel around the country to meet many of the winners that are featured in this edition of PDSA News.

So what else do we have for you in this edition?

We're launching our 2017 PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report a little earlier this year. It will focus on the pet owning population and looks at those areas where we can help people who are struggling to meet the five animal welfare needs. And we’re half-way through our diet and slimming competition for pets, Pet Fit Club, and are campaigning for owners to ‘skip the treats and hit the streets’.

We’ve also been busy with our Animal Awards programme which raises the status of animals in society and presented three medals to dogs Ozzy, Sweep and Sabby, as well as a PDSA Order of Merit to Search & Rescue Dog Bryn, who we'll feature next time.

As ever there’s plenty going on to save pets and change lives.

Breaking news

It’s thanks to a rescue dog named Diesel that one family lived to tell the tale of how he saved them from a devastating fire. Now the brave Staffie is to be awarded the prestigious PDSA Gold Medal. The Ash family were all sleeping peacefully when Diesel, from Dartmouth, began barking and scratching to alert them that something was wrong. If Diesel hadn’t woken them, the family would almost certainly have been killed after their freezer caught fire and the house was engulfed in flames. The PDSA Gold Medal is awarded for animal gallantry or devotion to duty and we’ll have more on this story in our next issue of PDSA News.
